At Ashton, all Year 7 and 8’s are given the opportunity to attend at least 1 outwards bound day per year. Trips run regularly throughout the year and students will participate with members of their form to develop teamwork, co-operation, problem solving and communication skills that will benefit them in other areas of the curriculum when returning to school. We see it as a vital part of their development within the school setting to participate in these sessions.
The key areas that we are looking for students to develop are:
- Confidence and self-belief
- Resilience and determination
- Problem solving
In todays’ society there is a focus on targets and benchmarking. However it is arguable that many attributes of a rounded young person, such as the willingness to positively contribute to society, perseverance, independence and confidence cannot easily be measured. Outward bound sessions can enable these attributes to flourish and be transferred into other areas of day to day school life.
We regularly use the Waterpark Lakeland Adventure Centre. The Estate comprises approximately 65 acres, mainly woodland, on the shore of Coniston Water and includes the former mansion house, ancillary buildings, a mile of lake shore, a marina and boathouse. It's superb location provides good access to Coniston Water, for a whole range of water based activities, Grizedale Forest and the south Lakeland Fells.
Students regularly participate in sessions that include; canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, low ropes courses, ghyll scrambling, trekking and coasteering.
