Welcome to the Modern Foreign Languages Department

"If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart."
Nelson Mandela

The ethos of the MFL department at Ashton is built around several core beliefs:

The MFL department at Ashton believes that teaching through the Target Language is an essential ingredient in effective language teaching to produce good linguists. Lessons are planned with a strong sense of fun and competition to engage students in the learning process.

Our learning and teaching...

At Ashton we offer French.  We also encourage students who have the ability to speak additional languages to gain accreditation in those languages. We have entered pupils for GCSE examinations in Spanish, Urdu, Chinese and Polish.

The following topics are studied during Key Stage 3.

Key Stage 3: French

Year 7

Year 8

Homework is set once per week and all tasks are recorded on Insight.

Key Stage 4: GCSE French: Years 9 - 11

We follow a 3 year Key Stage 4 with students beginning their GCSE French studies in Year 9. Students who opt to study GCSE French currently follow the AQA Specification. This qualification leads to a GCSE at grades 9-1. Assessment of the course is through examinations in the summer term of Year 11 when students are examined on the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each skill has a 25% weighting.

The following topics are studied during Key Stage 3.

Year 9

Year 10

Year 11

Homework is often set twice weekly for GCSE pupils. One of these tasks is linked to vocab learning or practising a specific grammar focus. The second task enables students to consolidate and develop work covered during lessons.
