"The Diggery" brings a whole new dimension to school life at Ashton!
Designed and created in conjunction with The Lancashire Wildlife Trust (LWT), this formerly disused area of the school grounds has been given a new lease of life. Incorporating an outdoor classroom with fire pit, a pond with a dipping platform, a sensory garden, semi-mature woodland, seating areas and quiet reading space, The Diggery brings a whole new dimension to school life at Ashton.
The Diggery will provide students with the ability to learn in the landscape by being the venue for the delivery of eco-therapy workshops in school. Outdoor experiential learning is fun and enjoyable and brings benefits to health, wellbeing and whole person development. Students have the opportunity to learn new skills, be creative, appreciate nature, develop resilience and become a well-rounded confident individual.
The outdoor area will be open to students and staff alike out of hours, providing a quiet retreat from the hubbub of daily life. Students will be able to help with the upkeep and development of the areas or simply relax in the surroundings enjoying the benefits of spending time outdoors and being closer to nature.
Work on The Diggery is never complete and it will continue to grow and mature over time. The next phase of its development will be to have its own allotment space and greenhouse where students can grow their own produce. Keep checking back for regular updates throughout the year
