Ashton 0 - 2 Broughton

The team was magnificent throughout the game. Deepdale is a huge pitch and with the warmer weather, it was always going to be an energy-sapping game. During the 1st half, Broughton started the brightest without really threatening the Ashton goal. The team defended well from corners and freekicks. The team have pace to burn, and we started to get success down the wings to start creating our own chances. Tom L and Nick C narrowly missing and a free kick from Alfie H, just over the bar. The defenders were looking strong with Lucas J and Habib B being stalwarts at the back.

At half time, the message was simple, keep doing what you’re doing, but you need to start being more clinical in front of goal. The 2nd half started like the first, with both teams playing well and defending well without any clear-cut chances. With 10 minutes to go, Broughton got down our wings and squared the ball for their first goal. Clearly disappointed the team did not let it affect them and kept pushing and pushing for the equalizer. However, as we did that, Broughton broke again late on to make it 0-2.

The scoreline does not reflect how the game went. Both teams were equally matched, and both had chances to win the game throughout. It was just on this day we did not come out the winners. An incredible achievement for the team and this was their first loss of the season, a tough one to take being a final. We go again next year!

Year 10

Ashton 1 - 4 Broughton

This team has worked incredibly hard for the past 18 months to become successful. Defensively we are stronger and tactically sound. To reach the final was an incredible achievement and the school is proud of it. Broughton is a particularly good team with countless town team players. We created multiple chances from corners in the first half but just could not get the flick on to score. We had a game plan to stop Broughton, and the boys stuck to this perfectly for 20 minutes until a dubious handball resulted in a Broughton penalty to make it 0-1. The lads being disappointed switched off for a second and it was soon 0-2. Half time was tough, the boys were disappointed to put in so much hard work and to be 0-2 down. Johnathan S made a great save to keep it 0-2 and half time.

At half-time the boys were reminded of the past successes and what we needed to do to get back into the game. They started the 2nd half better and started to get a grip on the game. Tyler G on the wing having an excellent game. Ollie C and Liam B running themselves into the ground to add pressure on the opposition. However, as we pressed forward, we would leave gaps at the back and Broughton twice made the most of this to make it 0-4. In the latter stages of the game, the ever-impressive Charlie W made a break into the box and scored a last-minute consolation.

Credit to the team for playing like they did on the day and the journey they have come on in the last 18 months. We go again next year!
